DODDS, See also:ALFRED AMD$E (1842– ), See also:French See also:general, was See also:born at St See also:Louis, See also:Senegal, on the 6th of See also:February 1842; his See also:father's See also:family was of Anglo-French origin. He was educated at See also:Carcassonne and at St Cyr, and in 1864 joined the marine See also:infantry as a sub-See also:lieutenant. He was promoted See also:captain for his services during the disturbances in See also:Reunion in 1868–69, in the course of which he was wounded. He served as a See also:company See also:commander in the Franco-See also:German See also:War, was taken prisoner at See also:Sedan but escaped, and took See also:part in the See also:campaigns of the See also:Loire and of the See also:East. In 1872 he was sent to See also:West See also:Africa, and. except when on active service in See also:Cochin See also:China (1878) and Tong-See also:King (1883), he remained on See also:duty in Senegal for the next twenty years, taking a prominent part in the operations which brought the countries of the Upper Senegal and Upper See also:Niger under French See also:rule. He led the expeditions against the Boal and Kayor (1889), the Serreres (1890) and the Futa (1891), and from r888 to 1891 was See also:colonel commanding the troops in Senegal. At the See also:close of 1891 he returned to See also:France to command the eighth marine infantry at See also:Toulon. In See also:April 1892 Dodds was selected to command the expeditionary force in See also:Dahomey; he occupied See also:Abomey, the hostile See also:capital, in See also:November, and in a second See also:campaign (1894) he completed the subjugation of the See also:country. He was then appointed inspector-general of the marine infantry, and after a tour of the French colonies was given the command of the XX. (Colonial) See also:Army See also:Corps, subsequently becoming inspector-general of colonial troops and a member of the Conseil superieur de guerre.
