Drexel (1792–1863), a native of See also:Austrian See also:Tirol, who emigrated to See also:America in 1817, and, after some years spent as a portrait-painter, became a banker and the founder of the See also:house of Drexel & See also:Company. Anthony, who entered his See also:father's counting-house in 1839, eventually, with his See also:brothers Francis and Joseph, succeeded to the See also:control of the business, and organized the banking houses of Drexel, See also:Morgan & Company, New See also:York, of which his See also:brother Joseph W. (1833–1888) was See also:long the See also:resident See also:head, and of Drexel, Harjes & Company, See also:Paris. In 1864 he joined his friend See also:George W. See also:Childs in the See also:purchase of the Philadelphia Public See also:Ledger, and with him in 1892 founded the Printers' See also:Home for See also:union men at See also:Colorado Springs. In 1891 he founded, and endowed with $2,000,000, the Drexel See also:Institute of See also:Art, See also:Science and See also:Industry in Philadelphia, the buildings for which he constructed at a cost of $750,000. This institution provides technical instruction for both See also:night and See also:day classes and public lecture courses, and has a See also:good museum and a library of 35,000 volumes. Drexel died at See also:Carlsbad, See also:Germany, on the 3oth of See also:June 1893.
