DUKERIES, THE , a name given to a See also:district in the N.W. of See also:Nottinghamshire, See also:England; included within the See also:ancient See also:Sherwood See also:Forest (q.v.). The name is taken from the existence of several adjacent demesnes of noblemen, and the See also:character of the Forest is to some extent preserved here. On the See also:north is the See also:Sheffield-See also:Retford See also:branch of the See also:Great Central railway, serving the See also:town of See also:Worksop, connecting at Retford with the Great See also:Northern railway, while on the See also:south the Great Central railway serves the small See also:market town of 011erton, and connects with the Great Northern at Dukeries Junction. The following demesnes are comprised in the district. Worksop See also:Manor formerly belonged to the See also:dukes of See also:Norfolk. Welbeck See also:Abbey is the seat of the dukes of See also:Portland, to whom it came from the See also:Cavendish See also:family (dukes of See also:Newcastle); the See also:mansion is mainly classic in See also:style, dating from the See also:early 17th See also:century, but with many subsequent additions; the fifth See also:duke of Portland (d. 1879) built the curious See also:series of subterranean corridors and See also:chambers beneath the grounds. Clumber See also:House, the seat of the dukes of Newcastle, is beautifully placed above a See also:lake in a See also:fine See also:park. Thoresby House is the seat of the earls Manvers, to whom it came on the extinction of the dukedom of See also:Kingston; See also:part of this See also:demesne is a splendid See also:tract of See also:wild woodland.
