EBERSWALDE , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the See also:kingdom of See also:Prussia, 28 m. N.E. of See also:Berlin by See also:rail; on the Finow See also:canal. Pop. (1905) 23,876. Thb town has a See also:Roman See also:Catholic and two Evangelical churches, a school of forestry, a gymnasium, a higher-grade girls' school and two See also:schools of domestic See also:economy. It possesses a See also:mineral See also:spring, which attracts numerous summer visitors, and has various See also:industries, which include See also:iron-See also:founding and the making of See also:horse-See also:shoe nails, roofing material and bricks. A considerable See also:trade is carried on in See also:grain, See also:wood and coals. In the immediate neighbourhood are one of the See also:chief See also:brass-foundries in Germany and an extensive See also:government See also:paper-See also:mill, in which the paper for the notes of the imperial See also:bank is manufactured. Eberswalde received its municipal See also:charter in 1257. It was taken and sacked during the See also:Thirty Years' See also:War. In 1747 See also:Frederick the See also:Great brought a See also:colony of Thuringian cutlers to the town, but this See also:branch of See also:industry has entirely died out. About 4 M. to the See also:north lies the old Cistercian monastery of See also:Chorin, the See also:fine See also:Gothic See also:church of which contains the tombs of several margraves of See also:Brandenburg.
