ELDUAYEN, JOSE DE , 1st See also:Marquis del Pazo de la Merced (1823-1898), See also:Spanish politician, was See also:born in See also:Madrid on the 22nd of See also:June 1823. He was educated in the See also:capital, took the degree of See also:civil engineer, and as such directed important See also:works in See also:Asturias and See also:Galicia, entered the See also:Cortes in 1856 as See also:deputy for See also:Vigo, and sat in all the parliaments until 1867 as member of the See also:Union Liberal with See also:Marshal O'Donnell. He attacked the Miraflores See also:cabinet in 1864, and became under-secretary of the See also:home See also:office when Canovas was See also:minister in 1865. He was made a councillor of See also:state in 1866, and in 1868 assisted the other members of the Union Liberal in preparing the revolution. In the Cortes of 1872 he took much See also:part in See also:financial debates. He accepted office as member of the last See also:Sagasta cabinet under See also:King Amadeus. On the See also:proclamation of the See also:republic Elduayen very earnestly co-operated in the Alphonsist See also:conspiracy, and endeavoured to induce the military and politicians to See also:work together. He went abroad to meet and accompany the See also:prince after the pronunciamiento of Marshal See also:Campos, landed with him at See also:Valencia, wasmade See also:governor of Madrid, a marquis, See also:grand See also:cross of See also:Charles III., and minister for the colonies in 1878. He accepted the See also:portfolio of See also:foreign affairs in the Canovas cabinet from 1883 to 1885, and was made a See also:life senator. He always prided himself on having beenone of the five members of the Cortes of 1870 who voted for See also:Alphonso XII. when that See also:parliament elected Amadeus of See also:Savoy. He died at Madrid on the 24th of June 1898.
