CHURCH See also:CONFERENCE , a See also:convention of delegates from the different See also:Protestant churches of See also:Germany. The conference originated in 1848, when the See also:general See also:desire for See also:political unity made itself See also:felt in the ecclesiastical See also:sphere as well. A preliminary See also:meeting was held at Sandhof near See also:Frankfort in See also:June of that See also:year, and on the 21st of See also:September some five See also:hundred delegates representing the Lutheran, the Reformed, the See also:United and the Moravian churches assembled at See also:Wittenberg. The gathering was known as Kirchentag (church See also:diet), and, while leaving each See also:denomination See also:free in respect of constitution, See also:ritual, See also:doctrine and attitude towards the See also:state, agreed to See also:act unitedly in bearing See also:witness against the non-evangelical churches and in defending the rights and liberties of the churchc3 ii the federation. The organization thus closely resembles that of the Free Church Federation in See also:England. The See also:movement exercised considerable See also:influence during the See also:middle of the 19th See also:century. Though no Kirchentag, as such, has been convened since 1871, its See also:place has been taken by the Kongrcss See also:fur innere See also:Mission, which holds See also:annual meetings in different towns. There is also a biennial conference of the evangelical churches held at See also:Eisenach to discuss matters of general See also:interest. Its decisions have no legislative force.
