FLUSHING , formerly a township and a See also:

village of Queens See also:county, New See also:York, U.S.A., on See also:Long See also:Island, at the See also:head of Flushing See also:Bay, since the 1st of See also:January 1898 a See also:part of the See also:borough of Queens, New York See also:City. Flushing is served by the Long Island railroad and by electric lines. It was settled in 1644 by a See also:company of See also:English non-conformists who had probably been residents of Flushing in See also:Holland, from which the new See also:place took its name. Subsequently a large number of See also:Quakers settled here, and in 1672 See also:George See also:Fox spent some See also:time in the township. Before the See also:War of See also:Independence Flushing was the See also:country-seat of many See also:rich New Yorkers and colonial officials.
