FORCHHEIM , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the See also:kingdom of See also:Bavaria, near the confluence of the Wiesent and the See also:Regnitz, 16 m. S.S.E. of See also:Bamberg. Pop. (1905) 8417. It has four See also:Roman See also:Catholic churches, including the See also:Gothic Collegiate See also:church and a See also:Protestant church. Among the other public buildings are the progymnasium and an orphanage. The See also:industries of the town include See also:spinning and See also:weaving, See also:bleaching and See also:dyeing, See also:bone and See also:glue See also:works, See also:brewing and See also:paper-making. The spacious See also:chateau occupies the site of the Carolingian See also:palace which was destroyed in 1246. Forchheim is of very See also:early origin, having been the See also:residence of the Carolingian sovereigns, including See also:Charlemagne, in the 9th See also:century. Consequently many diets were held here, and here also See also:Conrad I. and See also:Louis the See also:Child were chosen See also:German See also:kings. The town was given by the See also:emperor See also:Henry II. in 1007 to the bishopric of Bamberg, and, except for a See also:short See also:period during the 11th century, it remained in the See also:possession of the bishops until 1802, when it was ceded to Bavaria. In See also:August 1796 a See also:battle took See also:place near Forchheim between the See also:French and the Austrians.
