city, partly in See also:Seneca, partly in See also:Hancock, and partly in See also:Wood See also:county, See also:Ohio, U.S.A., 35 M. S. by E. of See also:Toledo. Pop. (1890) 7070; (1900) 7730 (584 See also:foreign-See also:born); (1910) 9597, It is served by the See also:Baltimore & Ohio, the New See also:York, See also:Chicago & St See also:Louis, the Ohio Central; the See also:Lake See also:Erie & Western, and the Hocking Valley See also:railways, and by two interurban electric lines. The city is situated in an agricultural region, and oil abounds in the vicinity. Among the city's manufactures are See also:glass, See also:flour, planing See also:mill products, See also:brass and See also:iron, carriages, barrels, incandescent lamps, carbons, See also:wire nails and fences, automobile engines and parts, railway torpedoes and See also:muslin underwear. The waterworks are owned and operated by the See also:municipality. In 1832, upon the coming of the first settlers, two towns, See also:Rome and Risdon, were laid out on the site of what is now Fostoria. A See also:bitter rivalry arose between them, but they were finally See also:united under one See also:government, and the city thus formed was named in See also:honour of See also:Charles W. See also:Foster, whose son Charles Foster (1828—1go4), See also:governor of the See also:state from 188o to 1884 and secretary of the United States See also:treasury from 1891 to 1893, did much to See also:pro-mote its growth. Fostoria was chartered as a city in 1854.
