As a stratigraphical geologist he rendered much assistance on the See also:Geological Survey of France, but in the course of See also:- TIME (0. Eng. Lima, cf. Icel. timi, Swed. timme, hour, Dan. time; from the root also seen in " tide," properly the time of between the flow and ebb of the sea, cf. O. Eng. getidan, to happen, " even-tide," &c.; it is not directly related to Lat. tempus)

His studies of the eruptive rocks of See also:Corsica, See also:Santorin and else-where; his researches on the artificial See also:reproduction of eruptive rocks, and his See also:treatise on the See also:optical characters of felspars deserve special mention; but he was perhaps best known for the See also:joint See also:work which he carried on with his friend See also:Michel See also:Levy. He died on the 7th of See also:March 1904. His See also:chief publications were: Santorin et ses eruptions, 1879; (with A. Michel Levy) Mineralogie micrographique, Roches eruptives fran(aises (2 vols., 1879) ; and Synthese See also:des mineraux et des roches (1882).
