He was elected member of the See also:Academy of See also:Inscriptions in 1887, and became See also:chief of the See also:historical See also:section of the See also:national archives in 1893. Leon Gautier rendered See also:great services to the study of See also:early French literature, the most important of his numerous See also:works on See also:medieval subjects being a See also:critical See also:text (See also:Tours, 1872) with See also:translation and introduction of the Chanson de See also:Roland, and See also:Les Epopees frangaises (3 vols., 1866-1867; 2nd ed., 5 vols., 1878-1897, including a Bibliographie des chansons de geste).
