GHAZIPUR , a See also:

town and See also:district of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:Benares See also:division of the See also:United Provinces. The town stands on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:Ganges, 44 M. E. of Benares. It is the headquarters of the See also:government See also:opium See also:department, where all the opium from the United Provinces is collected and manufactured under a See also:monopoly. There are also See also:scent distilleries, using the produce of the See also:rose-gardens in the vicinity. See also:Lord See also:Cornwallis, See also:governor-See also:general of India, died at Ghazipur in 18o5, and a domed See also:monument and See also:marble statue (by See also:Flaxman) are erected over his See also:grave. Pop. (1901) 39,429. The district of Ghazipur has an See also:area of 1389 sq. m. It forms See also:part of the See also:great alluvial See also:plain of the Ganges, which divides it into two unequal portions. The See also:northern subdivision lies between the See also:Gumti and the See also:Gogra, whose confluences with the See also:main stream See also:mark its eastern and western limits respectively. The See also:southern See also:tract is a much smaller See also:strip of See also:country, enclosed between the See also:Karamnasa and the great See also:river itself.

There are no hills in the district. A few lakes are scattered here and there, formed where the See also:

rivers have deserted their See also:ancient channels. The largest is that of Suraha, once a northern See also:bend of the Ganges, but now an almost isolated See also:sheet of See also:water, 5 M. See also:long by about 4 broad. Ghazipur is said to be one of the hottest and dampest districts in the United Provinces. In 1901 the See also:population was 913,818, showing a decrease of II % in the See also:decade. See also:Sugar refining is the See also:chief See also:industry, and provides the See also:principal See also:article of export. The main See also:line of the See also:East See also:Indian railway traverses the southern portion of the district, with a See also:branch to the Ganges bank opposite Ghazipur town; the northern portion is served by the See also:Bengal & See also:North-Western See also:system.
