He had been in the See also:band of an Irish See also:regiment, and he had See also:great success as See also:leader of a military band at See also:Salem, See also:Massachusetts, and subsequently (1859) in See also:Boston. He increased his reputation during the See also:Civil See also:War, particularly by organizing a See also:monster See also:orchestra of massed bands for a festival at New See also:Orleans in 1864; and at Boston in 1869 and 1872 he gave similar performances. He was enormously popular as a bandmaster, and composed or arranged a large variety of pieces for orchestra.
