Thus Giurgevo, besides having a considerable See also:trade with the See also:home ports See also:lower down the Danube, is the headquarters of See also:commerce between See also:Bulgaria and Rumania. It exports See also:timber, See also:grain, See also:salt and See also:petroleum; importing See also:coal, See also:iron and textiles. There are also large saw-See also:mills. Giurgevo occupies the site of Theodorapolis, a See also:city built by the See also:Roman See also:emperor Justinian (A.D. 483-565). It was founded in the 14th See also:century by Genoese See also:merchant adventurers, who established a bank, and a trade in silks and velvets. They called the town, after the See also:patron See also:saint of See also:Genoa, See also:San Giorgio (St See also:George); and hence comes its See also:present name. As a fortified town, Giurgevo figured often in the See also:wars for the See also:conquest of the lower Danube; especially in the struggle of See also:Michael the Brave (1J93–1601) against the See also:Turks, and in the later Russo-See also:Turkish Wars. It was burned in 1659. In 1829, its fortifications were finally razed, the only See also:defence left being a See also:castle on the See also:island of Slobosia, See also:united to the shore by a See also:bridge.
