GUBEN , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the See also:kingdom of See also:Prussia, at the confluence of the Lubis with the See also:Neisse, 28 m. S.S.E. of See also:Frankfort-on-See also:Oder, at the junction of See also:railways to See also:Breslau, See also:Halle and See also:Forst. Pop. (1875) 23,704; (1905) 36,666. It possesses three Evangelical churches, a See also:Roman See also:Catholic See also:church, a See also:synagogue, a gymnasium, a See also:modern school, a museum and a See also:theatre. The principalindustries are the See also:spinning and See also:weaving of See also:wool, See also:dyeing, tanning, and the manufacture of pottery See also:ware, hats, See also:cloth, See also:paper and machinery. The See also:vine is cultivated in the neighbourhood to some extent, and there is also some See also:trade in See also:fruit and vegetables. Guben is of Wendish origin. It is mentioned in 1207 and received civic rights in 1235. It was surrounded by walls in 1311, about which See also:time it came into the See also:possession of the See also:margrave of See also:Brandenburg, from whom it passed to Bohemia in 1368. It was twice devastated by the See also:Hussites, and in 1631 and 1642 it was occupied by the Swedes. By the See also:peace of See also:Prague in 1635 it came into the possession of the elector of See also:Saxony, and in 1815 it was, with the See also:rest of See also:Lower See also:Lusatia, See also:united to Prussia.
