KAISERSLAUTERN , a See also:town in the Bavarian See also:palatinate, on the Waldlauter, in the hilly See also:district of Westrich, 41 M. by See also:rail W. of See also:Mannheim. Pop. (1905), 52,306. Among its educational institutions are a gymnasium, a See also:Protestant normal school, a commercial school and an See also:industrial museum. The See also:house of correction occupies the site of See also:Frederick See also:Barbarossa's See also:castle, which was demolished by the See also:French in 1713. Kaiserslautern is one of the most important industrial towns in the palatinate. Its See also:industries include See also:cotton and See also:wool See also:spinning and See also:weaving, See also:iron-See also:founding, and the manufacture of See also:beer, See also:tobacco, gloves, boots, See also:furniture, &c. There is some See also:trade in See also:fruit and in See also:timber.
Kaiserslautern takes its name from the See also:emperor (Kaiser) Frederick I., who built a castle here about 1152, although it appears to have been a royal See also:residence in Carolingian times. It became an imperial See also:city, a dignity which it retained until 1357, when it passed to the palatinate. In 1621 it was taken by the See also:Spanish, in 1631 by the See also:Swedish, in 1635 by the imperial and in 1713 by the French troops. During 1793 and 1794 it was the See also:scene of fighting; and in the Franco-Prussian See also:War of 187o it was the See also:base of operations of the second See also:German See also:army, under See also:Prince Frederick See also: It was one of the See also:early stations of the See also:Reformation, and in 1849 was the centre of the revolutionary spirit in the palatinate.
