During the earlier stages of the war he served in the Morea, and had a somewhat discreditable See also:share in the intrigues which divided the Greek leaders. But he showed a sense of the See also:necessity for providing the See also:country with a See also:government, and was a steady supporter of See also:Capo d'See also:Istria. His most See also:honourable services were performed in the See also:middle and later stages of the war. He helped to raise the first See also:siege of See also:Missolonghi in 1823, and did his best to See also:save the See also:town in the second siege in 1826. In that See also:year he commanded the patriot forces in See also:Rumelia, and though he failed to co-operate effectually with other chiefs, or with the See also:foreign sympathizers fighting for the Greeks, he gained some successes against the See also:Turks which were very welcome amid the disasters of the See also:time. He took a share in the unsuccessful attempts to raise the siege of See also:Athens in 1827, and made an effort to prevent the disastrous See also:massacre of the See also:Turkish See also:garrison of fort S Spiridion. He was shot in See also:action on the 4th of May 1827. See also:Finlay speaks of him as a capable See also:partisan leader who had See also:great See also:influence over his men, and describes him as of " middle See also:size, thin, dark-complexioned, with a See also:bright expressive See also:animal See also:eye which indicated gipsy See also:blood."
