KHULNA , a See also:

town and See also:district of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:Presidency See also:division of See also:Bengal. The town stands on the See also:river Bhairab, and is the See also:terminus of the Bengal Central railway, 109 M. E. of See also:Calcutta. Pop. (1901), 10,426. It is the most important centre of river-See also:borne See also:trade in the See also:delta. The DISTRICT of KHULNA lies in the See also:middle of the delta of the See also:Ganges, including a portion of the See also:Sundarbans or seaward fringe of swamps. It was formed out of See also:Jessore in 1882. See also:Area (excluding the Sundarbans), 2077 sq. m. Besides the Sundarbans, the See also:north-See also:east See also:part of the district is swampy; the north-See also:west is more elevated and drier, while the central part, though See also:low-lying, is cultivated. The whole is alluvial. In 1901 the See also:population was 1,253,043, showing an increase of 6% in the See also:decade.
