It is situated at the eastern extremity of the See also:island Csall6koz or See also:Grosse Schutt, at the confluence of the Waag with the See also:Danube. Just below Komarom the two arms into which the Danube separates below See also:Pressburg, forming the Grosse Schutt island, unite again. Since 1896 the See also:market-See also:town of Uj-Szony, which lies on the opposite See also:bank of the Danube, has been incorporated with Komarom. The town is celebrated chiefly for its fortifications, which See also:form the centre of the inland fortifications of the Austro-Hungarian See also:monarchy. A brisk See also:trade in cereals, See also:timber, See also:wine and See also:fish is carried on. Komarom is one of the See also:oldest towns of Hungary, having received its See also:charter in 1265. The fortifications were begun by See also:Matthias See also:Corvinus, and were enlarged and strengthened during the See also:Turkish See also:wars (1526-64). New forts were constructed in 1663 and were greatly enlarged between 18o5 and 1809. In 1543, 1594, 1598 and 1663 it was beleaguered by the See also:Turks. It was raised to the dignity of a royal See also:free town in 1751. During the revolutionary See also:war of 1848-49 Komarom was a See also:principal point of military operations, and was See also:long unsuccessfully besieged by the Austrians, who on the lrth of See also:July 1849 were defeated there by See also:General See also:Gorgei, and on the 3rd of See also:August by General See also:Klapka. On the 27th of See also:September the fortress capitulated to the Austrians upon See also:honourable terms, and on the 3rd and 4th of See also:October was evacuated by the Hungarian troops. The treasure of the See also:Austrian See also:national bank was removed here from See also:Vienna in 1866, when that See also:city was threatened by the Prussians.
