LOVERE , a See also:

town of See also:Lombardy, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Bergamo, at the See also:north-See also:west end of the Lago d' See also:Iseo, 522 ft. above See also:sea-level. Pop. (1901) 3306. It is a picturesque town, the houses having the overhanging wooden See also:roofs of See also:Switzerland See also:united with the heavy See also:stone arcades of Italy, while the situation is beautiful, with the See also:lake in front and the semicircle of bold mountains behind. The See also:church of See also:Santa Maria in Valvendra, built in 1473, has frescoes by Floriano Ferramola of See also:Brescia (d. 1528). The Palazzo Tadini contains a See also:gallery of old pictures, some sculptures by Benzoni and See also:Canova, and a zoological collection. Lovere possesses a See also:silk-See also:spinning factory, and the Stablimento Metallurgico Gregorini, a large See also:iron-See also:work and See also:cannon foundry, employs 1600 workmen. Lovere is reached by steamer from Sarnico at the See also:south end of the lake, and there is a See also:steam See also:tramway through the Val Camonica, which is highly cultivated, and contains iron- and silk-See also:works. From Cividate, the See also:terminus; the road goes on to Edolo (2290 ft.), whence passes See also:lead into See also:Tirol and the See also:Valtellina.
