MEDINA, JOSE TORIBIO (1852- ) , Chilean bibliographer, was See also:born at See also:Santiago, and was educated for the See also:bar. His first publication, when a very See also:young See also:man, was a metrical See also:translation of See also:Longfellow's Evangeline. When twenty-two he was appointed secretary to the See also:legation at See also:Lima. After his return he published a See also:history of Chilean literature (1878), and a See also:work upon the aboriginal tribes (1884). In this latter See also:year he was appointed secretary of legation in See also:Spain, and availed himself of the opportunity of examining the treasures of the old See also:Spanish See also:libraries. These researches, repeated on subsequent visits to Spain, and also to See also:France and See also:England, enriched him with a See also:mass of See also:historical and See also:bibliographical material. Among his publications may be mentioned the Biblioteca hispano-americana, a See also:catalogue of 'all books and See also:pamphlets See also:relating to Spanish See also:America printed in Spain; the Biblioteca hispano-chilena, a similar work, commenced in 1897; the See also:standard and magnificent history of See also:printing in the La See also:Plata countries (1892); comprehensive See also:works on the See also:Inquisition in See also:Chile, See also:Peru and the Philippines; and the standard See also:treatise on See also:South See also:American medals (1899). In addition, Senor Medina produced the fullest See also:bibliographies yet attainable of books printed at Lima, See also:Mexico and See also:Manila, and a number of See also:memoirs and other See also:minor writings. No other man had rendered anything like the same amount of service to the See also:literary history and bibliography of the Spanish colonies.
