MEUDON , a See also:

town of See also:northern See also:France, in the See also:department of See also:Seine-et-See also:Oise, 6 m. E. of See also:Versailles by See also:rail and about 21 M. S.W. of See also:Paris. Pop. (1906), 9597. The remains of a See also:castle (17th See also:century) burned during the See also:siege of Paris in 1871 have since been adapted as an See also:observatory. Its See also:terrace commands a See also:fine view of Paris. The handsome Galliera Institutions, on the See also:hill of See also:Fleury, were founded by the duchess of Galliera for the reception of aged persons and orphans. The buildings were completed in 1885, at a cost of £56o,000. The town has a See also:monument of See also:Rabelais, who was cure there in 1553, and manufactures munitions of See also:war for the See also:artillery, and in the neighbouring See also:park of Chalais is the See also:Government military ballooning See also:establishment. In the 16th century the See also:cardinal, See also:Charles of See also:Lorraine, built at Meudon a magnificent See also:chateau, which was destroyed in 1803. The See also:present remains belong to a See also:building erected by the dauphin, son of See also:Louis XIV.
