burgh of See also:barony, and See also:police burgh, of Upper Annandale, See also:Dumfriesshire, See also:Scotland. Pop. (1901), 2153. It is situated.21 m. N.N.E. of See also:Dumfries by road and 63 m. distant by the Caledonian railway, from both See also:Edinburgh and See also:Glasgow. It is the See also:terminus of a See also:branch See also:line from Beattock, 2 M. distant. It has been famous for its See also:sulphur and saline See also:waters since the See also:middle of the 18th See also:century, and also enjoys See also:great See also:vogue as a See also:holiday resort. The hills in the locality range from the adjacent Gallow See also:Hill (832 ft.) to Hartfell (2651 ft.); about 5 M. See also:north there is abundance of beautiful and varied scenery on the See also:Annan, the Evan, the Birnock and the Moffat. The See also:spa, a mile to the north of the See also:town, was acquired by the burgh commissioners in 1898, and there are also spas at Hartfell (32 M. north) and Garpel (2 M. See also:south-See also:west). Dumcrieff See also:House, 2 M. south-west, is the seat of See also:Lord Rollo.
