MONNIKENDAM , a fishing See also:

village of See also:Holland, in the See also:province of See also:North Holland, on an inlet of the Zuider Zee known as the Gouw Zee, 12 M. N.N.E. of See also:Amsterdam, with which it is connected by See also:steam See also:tramway. It was once a flourishing See also:town, but its quietness now is only disturbed by the See also:advent of the numerous tourists who visit it in the summer, See also:crossing hence to the See also:island of Marken. Among the notable buildings are the weigh-See also:house (17th See also:century), the See also:bell-See also:tower (1591), formerly attached to the town-See also:hall before this was destroyed in the 18th century, and the See also:church of St. See also:Nicholas, with its beautiful massive tower. Mention is made of this church in a document of 1356, but it was not completed until the beginning of the 15th century. It contains some See also:fine carvings, many interesting old tombs, and a See also:monument of See also:Jan Nieuwenhuizen, the founder of the Society for Public Welfare (Tot See also:Nut See also:van het Algemeen) in 1785.
