MORATIN, See also:NICOLAS See also:FERNANDEZ DE (1737-1780) , See also:Spanish poet and dramatist, was See also:born at See also:Madrid in 1737. He was educated at the Jesuit See also:College in See also:Calatayud and afterwards studied See also:law at the university of See also:Valladolid. In 1772 he was called to the See also:bar; four years afterwards he was nominated to the See also:chair of See also:poetry at the imperial college. He died on the 11th of May 1780. A See also:partisan of See also:French methods, Moratin published in 1762 his Desengano at teatro espanol, a severe See also:criticism of the See also:national See also:drama, particularly of the auto sacramental; and his protests were partly responsible for the See also:prohibition of autos three years afterwards (See also:June 1765). In 1762 he also published a See also:play entitled La Petimetra. Neither the Petimetra nor the See also:Lucretia (1763), an See also:original tragedy still more strictly in accordance with French conventions, was represented on the See also:stage, and two subsequent tragedies, Hormesinda (1770) and Guzmdn el Buena (1777), were played with no See also:great success. In 1764 Moratin published a collection of pieces, chiefly lyrical, under the See also:title of El Poeta, and in 1765 a See also:short didactic poem on the See also:chase (See also:Diana 6 ante de la caza). His " epic See also:canto" on the destruction of his See also:ships by See also:Cortes (See also:Las Naves de Cartes destruidas) failed to win a See also:prize offered by the See also:Academy in 1777, and was published posthumously (1785). But a better See also:idea of Moratfn's See also:talent is afforded by his anacreontic verses and by his Carta hist6rica sabre el See also:origen y progresos de las fiestas de taros en Espana. His See also:works are included in the Biblioteca de autores espanoles, vol. ii.
