Though his poetical tastes were See also:early See also:developed, his See also:father apprenticed him to a jeweller. At the See also:age of eighteen Moratin won the second See also:prize of the See also:Academy for a heroic poem on the See also:conquest of See also:Granada, and two years afterwards he attracted more See also:general See also:attention with his Leccien poetica, a See also:satire uponthe popular poets of the See also:day. He was appointed secretary to See also:Cabarrus on a See also:special See also:mission to See also:France in 1787. On his return to See also:Spain, Moratin was tonsured and presented to a See also:sinecure See also:benefice in the See also:diocese of See also:Burgos, and in 1786 his first See also:play, El Viejo y la nina,was produced at the Teatro del Principe. Owing to the opposition of the clerical party, it was speedily withdrawn. The See also:prose See also:comedy, El Cafe 6 la comedia nueva, given at the same See also:theatre six years afterwards, at once became popular. On the fall of See also:Florida Blanca, Moratin found another See also:patron in See also:Godoy, who provided him with a" See also:pension and the means for See also:foreign travel; he accordingly visited See also:England, where he began a prose See also:translation of See also:Hamlet, printed in 1798 but never performed. From England he passed to the See also:Low Countries, See also:Germany, See also:Switzerland and See also:Italy, and on his return to the See also:Peninsula in 1796 was appointed See also:official translator to the foreign See also:office. In 1803 he produced El See also:BarOn in its See also:present See also:form; originally written (179,) as a zarzuela, it was shamelessly plagiarized by See also:Andres de See also:Mendoza, but the recast, a far more brilliant See also:work, still keeps the See also:stage. It was followed in 1804 by La Mogigata, written between 1797 and 1803.

This piece was favourably received, and an See also:

attempt to suppress it on religious grounds failed. Moratfn's crowning See also:triumph in See also:original comedy was El Si de See also:las Ninas (1806), which was performed See also:night after night to crowded houses, ran through several Spanish See also:editions in a See also:year, and was soon translated into a number of foreign See also:languages. In 18o8 Moratin was involved in the fall of Godoy, but in 1811 accepted the office of royal librarian under See also:Joseph See also:Bonaparte=a false step, which alienated from him all sympathy and compelled him to spend his last years in See also:exile. In 1812 his Escuela de los maridos, a translation of See also:Moliere's Ecole See also:des maxis, was produced at Madrid, and in 1813 El Medico 4 Palos (a translation of Le Medecin malgre lui) at See also:Barcelona. From 1814 to 1828 Moratin lived in Italy and France, compiling a work on the early Spanish See also:drama (Origenes del teatro eipanol). He died at See also:Paris on the 21st of See also:June 1828. The most convenient edition of his See also:works is that given in "vol. ii. of the Biblioteca de, autores espanoles; this is supplemented by the Obras postumas (3 vols., Madrid, 1867-1868).
