MURGHAB , a See also:

river of See also:Afghanistan, which flows into See also:Russian territory. It rises in the Firozkhoi See also:highlands, the See also:northern scarp of which is defined by the See also:Band-i-See also:Turkestan, and after traversing that See also:plateau from See also:east to See also:west it turns See also:north through deep defiles to See also:Bala Murghab. Beyond this, in the See also:neighbour-See also:hood of Maruchak, it forms for a space the boundary-See also:line between Afghan and Russian Turkestan; then joining the See also:Kushk river at Pul-i-Khishti (Tash Kupri) it runs north to See also:Merv, losing itself in the sands of the Mery See also:desert after a course of about 450 m., its exact source being unknown. In the neighbourhood of Bala Murghab it is 50 yds. broad and some 3 ft. deep, with a rapid current. In the See also:lower See also:part of its course it is flanked by a remarkable network of canals. The See also:ancient See also:city of Merv, which was on its See also:banks, was the See also:great centre of See also:medieval Arab See also:trade, and Buddhist caves are found in the scarped cliffs of its right See also:bank near See also:Panjdeh.
