PANJDEH, or PENJDEH , a See also:village of See also:Russian See also:Turkestan, rendered famous by " the Panjdeh scare " of 1885. It is situated on the See also:east See also:side of the See also:Kushk See also:river near its junction with the See also:Murghab at Pul-i-Khishti. In See also:March 1885 when the Russo-Afghan Boundary See also:Commission should have been engaged in settling the boundary-See also:line, this portion of it was in dispute between the Afghans and the Russians. A See also:part of the Afghan force was encamped on the See also:west See also:bank of the Kushk, and on the 29th of March See also:General Komarov sent an See also:ultimatum demanding their withdrawal. On their refusal the Russians attacked them at 3 a.m. on the 3oth of March and drove them across the Pul-i-Khishti See also:Bridge with a loss of some 600 men. The incident nearly give rise to See also:war between See also:England and See also:Russia; but the See also:amir Abdur-Rahman, who was See also:present at the See also:Rawalpindi See also:conference with See also:Lord Dufferin at the See also:time, affected to regard the See also:matter as a See also:mere frontier scuffle. The border-line subsequently laid down gives to Russia the corner between the Kushk and Murghab See also:rivers as far as Maruchak on the Murghab, and the Kushk See also:post has now become the frontier post of the Russian See also:army of occupation.
