NAINI TAL , a See also:

town and See also:district of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:Kumaon See also:division of the See also:United Provinces. The town is 6400 ft. above See also:sea-level. Pop. (19or) 7609. Naini Tal is a popular See also:sanatorium for the residents in the plains, and the summer See also:head-quarters of the See also:government of the See also:province. It is situated on a See also:lake, surrounded by high mountains, and is subject to landslides; a serious See also:catastrophe of this See also:kind occurred in See also:September 1880. The approach from the plains is by the See also:Rohilkhand and Kumaon railway from See also:Bareilly, which has its See also:terminus at Kathgodam, 22 M. distant by See also:cart road. There are several See also:European See also:schools, besides See also:barracks and convalescent See also:depot for European soldiers. The DISTRICT OF NAINI TAL comprises the See also:lower hills of Kumaon and the adjoining See also:Tarai or submontane See also:strip. See also:Area, 2677 sq. m. Pop. (19or) 311,237i showing a decrease of 15.4% in the See also:decade.

The district includes the Gagar and other foothills of the Himalayas, which reach an extreme height of nearly 9000 ft. The Bhabar See also:

tract at their See also:base consists of boulders from the mountains, among which the See also:hill streams are swallowed up. Forests See also:cover vast tracts of the hill-See also:country and the Bhabar. Beyond this is the Tarai, moist and extremely unhealthy. Here the See also:principal crops are See also:rice and See also:wheat. In the hills a small amount of See also:tea is grown, and a considerable quantity of See also:fruit.
