ORLEANAIS , one of the provinces into which See also:

France was divided before the Revolution. It was the See also:country around See also:Orleans, the pagus Aurelianensis; it See also:lay on both See also:banks of the See also:Loire, and for ecclesiastical purposes formed the See also:diocese of Orleans. It was in the See also:possession of the See also:Capet See also:family before the See also:advent of See also:Hugh Capet to the See also:throne of France in 987, and in 1344 See also:Philip VI. gave it with the See also:title of See also:duke to Philip (d. 1375), one of his younger sons. In a See also:geographical sense the region around Orleans is sometimes known as Orleanais, but this is somewhat smaller than the former See also:province. See A.
