PANDUA , a ruined See also:

city in See also:Malda See also:district of Eastern See also:Bengal and See also:Assam, once a See also:Mahommedan See also:capital. It is situated 7 M. N.E. of Malda, and about 20 M. from the other See also:great ruined city of See also:Gaur (q.v.), from which it was largely built. It was probably originally an outpost of Gaur, and See also:grew in importance as Gaur became unhealthy. In A.D. 1353 Haji Shamsuddin Ilyas, the first See also:independent See also:king of Bengal, transferred his capital from Gaur to Pandua; but the See also:time of its prosperity was See also:short, and in A.D. 1453 the capital was transferred back to Gaur. Its only celebrated See also:building is the Adina See also:Mosque, which was described by See also:James See also:Fergusson as the finest example of See also:Pathan See also:architecture in existence. This great mosque was built by Sikandar Shah in 1369 (see See also:INDIAN ARCHITECTURE). Pandua now, like Gaur, is almost entirely given over to the See also:jungle.
