POROS , or PoRO (" the See also:

Ford "), an See also:island off the See also:east See also:coast of the Morea, separated at its western extremity by only a narrow channel from the mainland at Troezen, and consisting of a See also:mass of See also:limestone See also:rock and of a mass of See also:trachyte connected by a slight sandy See also:isthmus. The See also:town looks down on the beautiful See also:harbour between the island and the mainland on the See also:south. The See also:ancient Calauria, with which Poros is identified, was given, according to the myth, by See also:Apollo to See also:Poseidon in See also:exchange for See also:Delos; and it became in historic times famous for a See also:temple of the See also:sea-See also:god, which formed the centre of an See also:amphictyony of seven maritime states—Hermione, See also:Epidaurus, See also:Aegina, See also:Athens, Prasiae, Na.uplia, and See also:Orchomenus. Here See also:Demosthenes took See also:sanctuary with " gracious Poseidon," and, when this threatened to fail him, sought See also:death. The See also:building was of Doric See also:architecture and See also:lay on a See also:ridge of the See also:hill commanding a See also:fine view of Athens and the Saronic Gulf, near the See also:middle of the limestone See also:part of the island. The site was excavated in 1894, and traces of a sacred See also:agora with porticoes and other buildings, as well as the temple, have been found. In the neighbourhood of Poros-Calauria are two small islands, the more See also:westerly of which contains the ruins of a small temple, and is probably the ancient Sphaeria or Hiera mentioned by See also:Pausanias as the seat of a temple of See also:Athena See also:Apaturia. The See also:English, See also:French, and See also:Russian plenipotentiaries met at Poros in 1828 to discuss the basis of the See also:Greek See also:government.
