PRADILLA, FRANCISCO (1847– ) , See also:Spanish painter, was See also:born at Villanueva da Gallago (See also:Saragossa). Having studied first at the Fernando See also:Academy, and then at the Spanish Academy in See also:Rome, of which he was afterwards director, he became the leading See also:historical painter of See also:modern See also:Spain. In 1896 he was appointed director of the See also:Madrid Museum. Though he is best known for such large historical compositions as " See also:Joan the Mad" (See also:gold See also:medal, See also:Paris, 1878), and " The Surrender of See also:Granada " (gold medal, See also:Munich, 1883), in which he discarded the heavy colouring of See also:Laurens for a lighter and more atmospheric See also:key, he has painted many excellent genre pictures in the manner of See also:Fortuny, and some decorative compositions in which he follows the example of See also:Tiepolo. The best of these are his decorations in the Murgo See also:Palace in Madrid. Among his best known See also:works are " Elopement," " Strand at See also:Vigo," " Procession in See also:Venice," " La Fiorella," " See also:Reading on the See also:Balcony," " Doti Alfonso the See also:Warrior," and " See also:Don Alfonso the See also:Scholar." He became member of the See also:Berlin Academy in 1892.
