He studied See also:law at See also:Berlin and See also:Heidelberg, and was attached to the provincial See also:government at See also:Magdeburg from 1846–1848. In 1853 he married Grafin Elisabeth von See also:Konigsmark, and lived on his See also:estate until 1863, when he became director of the See also:Court See also:theatre a t See also:Schwerin. This See also:post he See also:left in 1867, was for a See also:short See also:time See also:chamberlain to the See also:crown See also:prince of See also:Prussia, afterwards the See also:emperor See also:Frederick, and from 1873 to 1889 successfully directed the Court theatre at See also:Karlsruhe. He died at Retzien on the 5th of See also:September 189o. Putlitz made his debut as a writer with a See also:volume of romantic stories, Was sick der Wald erz¢hlt (1850), which attained See also:great popularity (fifty See also:editions) and found many imitators; but he was most successful in his comedies, notably Badekuren (1859); Das Herz vergessen (1853); and Spielt nicht mit dem Feuer/ (1887), while of his narratives See also:Die Alpenbraut (187o) and See also:Walpurgis (187o) are distinguished by refined terseness of See also:style and delicacy of See also:portraiture. A selection of his See also:works, Ausgewahlte Werke, was published in 6 vols. in Berlin (1872–1877), and a supplementary volume in 1888; his comedies, Lustspiele, appeared in two See also:series of 4 vols. each (1851–186o and 1869-1872).
