RAOUL ROCHETTE, See also:

DESIRE (1790-1854) , See also:French archaeologist, was See also:born on the 9th of See also:March 1790 at St Amand in the See also:department of See also:Cher, and received his See also:education at See also:Bourges. He was made See also:professor of See also:history in the See also:College de See also:Louis-le-See also:Grand at See also:Paris (1813) and in the See also:Sorbonne (1817). His Histoire critique de l'etablissement See also:des colonies grecques (4 vols., 1815) is now out of date. He was See also:superintendent of antiquities in the Bibliotheque at Paris (1819-48), and professor ofarchaeology at the Bibliotheque (from 1826), a result of which may be seen in his Cours d'archeologie (1828). In 1829 appeared his Monuments inedits, a See also:work of See also:great value at the See also:time. Still valuable are his Peintures inedites (1836) and his Peintures de Pompei (1844). He contributed to the Annali of the See also:Roman See also:Institute, the See also:Journal des savants and the Academie des See also:inscriptions. At his See also:death on the 3rd of See also:July 1854 Raoul Rochette was perpetual secretary of the See also:Academy of See also:Fine Arts and a corresponding member of most of the learned See also:societies in See also:Europe.
