His See also:father (d. 1822), as Kammerdirektor in Anhalt, did excellent service to See also:agriculture. After studying at the Joachimsthal Gymnasium, See also:Berlin, and at the See also:universities of See also:Halle and See also:Gottingen, Raumer began to practise See also:law, and See also:rose in the See also:civil service under See also:Hardenberg, the See also:chancellor. He was made a See also:professor at the university of See also:Breslau in 1811, and in 1819 he became professor of See also:political See also:science and See also:history at Berlin, holding the See also:chair until 1847, and giving occasional lectures until 1853. In 1815 he had carried on See also:historical investigations in See also:Venice, and in the two following years he had travelled in See also:Germany, See also:Switzerland and See also:Italy. In 1848 he was elected a member of the German See also:parliament at See also:Frankfort, where he associated himself with the right centre, supporting the proposal for a German See also:empire under the supremacy of See also:Prussia; and he was one of the deputation which offered the imperial See also:crown to See also:Frederick See also: His most famous See also:works are Geschichte der See also:Hohenstaufen and ihrer Zeit (1823–25; 5th ed., 1876) and Geschichte Europas seit dem Ende des z5ten Jahrhunderts (1832–50). In 1831 appeared Briefe aus See also:Paris and Frankreich See also:im Jahre 1830 and Briefe aus Paris zur Erlauterung der Geschichte des Idten and Igten Jahrhunderts. He went to See also:England in 1835, to Italy in 1839 and to See also:America in 1843, and these visits led to the publication of various works—England in 1835 (1836), Beitrage zur neuern Geschichte aus dem Britischen Museum and Reichsarchive (1836–39), Italien, Beitrage zur Kenniniss dieses See also:Landes (184o), See also:Die Vereinigten Staaten von Nordamerika (1845). Among his later books may be mentioned Antiquarische Briefe (1851), Historisch-politische Briefe fiber die geselligen Verhdltnisse der Menschen (186o), Lebenserinnerungen and Briefwechsel (1861) and Handbuch zur Geschichte der Literatur (1864–66). In 1830 Raumer began the Historisches Taschenbuch published by See also:Brockhaus, which from 1871 was continued by Riehl.
