ROVIGNO , a seaport of See also:

Austria, in See also:Istria, 75 M. S. of See also:Trieste by See also:rail. Pop. (1900) 10,205, mostly See also:Italian. It is situated on the See also:west See also:coast of Istria, and possesses an interesting See also:cathedral, built on the See also:summit of the promontory See also:Monte di Sant' Eufemia. Its campanile, built after the See also:model of the famous campanile in See also:Venice, is crowned with a See also:bronze statue of St Eufemia, the See also:patron See also:saint of the See also:town, whose remains are preserved in the See also:church. It contains a station of the See also:Berlin See also:Aquarium, with a See also:fine collection of the See also:fauna of the Adriatic See also:Sea. In the neighbourhood are vineyards, which produce the best See also:wine in Istria, and See also:olive gardens, while its See also:hazel-nuts are reputed the finest in the See also:world. Rovigno is the See also:principal centre of the See also:Austrian See also:tunny and sardine See also:fishery. The See also:industries, in addition to See also:ship-See also:building and the preservation of See also:fish, include the manufacture of See also:tobacco, See also:cement, See also:macaroni and similar preparations, and See also:flour. There is an active export See also:trade. Its inhabitants are renowned See also:seamen.

Rovigno is the See also:

ancient Arupenum or Rubinum, and according to tradition it was originally built on an See also:island, Cissa by name, which disappeared during the See also:earth-quakes about 737. Rovigno passed definitively into the hands of the Venetians in 1330, and it remained true to the See also:republic till the treaty of Campo Formio (1797).
