He graduated at New York University in 1872, and later studied at the School of Mines, See also:Columbia, where he was Assistant See also:professor of See also:geology from 1875-77. He was assistant Geologist on the See also:United States See also:Geographical and See also:Geological Surveys in 1878, and in 188o became attached to the Geological Survey of the United States. In 1892 he was appointed professor of geology in the university of See also:Michigan.
