SAARLOUIS , a See also:

town and former fortress of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:Rhine See also:Province, situated in a fertile See also:district on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:Saar, and on the railway from See also:Saarbrucken to See also:Trier, 4c M. S. of the latter. Pop. (1905) 8313. The town is well laid out and has spacious streets and a handsome See also:market square. It contains a See also:Roman See also:Catholic and a• See also:Protestant See also:church, a town See also:hall, the walls of the See also:council chamber in which are hung with Gobelins, the See also:gift of See also:Louis XIV., a classical school and a See also:hospital. There are See also:coal-mines in the vicinity, and the town has consider-able manufactures of See also:porcelain, See also:enamel wares and See also:leather, as well as a brisk See also:trade in See also:cattle and See also:grain. Saarlouis was founded in 1681 by Louis XIV. of See also:France, and was fortified by See also:Vauban in 168o-1685. By the See also:peace of See also:Paris, in 1815, it was ceded to the See also:allies and by them was made over to See also:Prussia. The fortifications were dismantled in 1889.
