SHANKLIN , a watering-See also:

place in the Isle of See also:Wight, See also:England, 82 m. S. of See also:Ryde by See also:rail. Pop. of See also:urban See also:district (1901) 4533. It is beautifully situated on the cliffs bordering the S.E. See also:coast, and is sheltered W. by high-lying See also:downs. The See also:church of St See also:John the Baptist is Perpendicular.. There are several See also:modern churches and chapels, numerous villas, a See also:pier and a lift connecting the See also:town with the esplanade beneath the cliff. The picturesque winding chasm of Shanklin Chine breaches the cliffs S. of the town.
