RYDE , a municipal See also:

borough and watering-See also:place in the Isle of See also:Wight, See also:England, 5 M. S.S.W. of See also:Portsmouth. Pop. (1901) 11,043. It is beautifully situated on rising ground on the N.E. See also:coast, overlooking Spithead. It occupies the site of a See also:village called La See also:Rye or La Riche, which was destroyed by the See also:French in the reign of See also:Edward II. About the See also:close of the 18th See also:century it was a small fishing See also:hamlet, but it rapidly See also:grew into favour as a watering-place. Ryde is connected by See also:rail with the other towns in the See also:island, and there is also See also:steam-See also:boat communication with Portsmouth, See also:Southampton, See also:Southsea, Portsea and Stoke's See also:Bay. The See also:pier, built originally in 1812, but since then greatly extended, forms a delightful See also:promenade See also:half a mile in length. The railway trains run out to its See also:head, and an electric See also:tramway also runs along it. The See also:principal buildings are All See also:Saints See also:church, erected in 1870 from the designs of See also:Sir See also:Gilbert See also:Scott, and other churches, the See also:market See also:house and See also:town See also:hall, the Royal See also:Victoria Yacht See also:club-house, the See also:theatre and the Royal Isle of Wight Infirmary. There are See also:golf-links near the town.

The town was incorporated in 1868, and is governed by a See also:

mayor, 6 aldermen and 18 councillors. See also:Area, 819 acres.
