SHOEBURYNESS , a promontory on the See also:

coast of See also:Essex, See also:England, the point at which the coast-See also:line trends See also:north-eastward from the See also:estuary of the See also:Thames. It gives name to a school of gunnery, where See also:officers are instructed and experiments carried out. The railway station (39 M. E. from See also:London, the See also:terminus of the London, Tilbury and Southend railway) bears the same name, but the See also:parish is See also:South Shoebury; North Shoebury is a parish situated nearer to Southend-on-See also:Sea. The See also:church of St See also:Andrew retains some ornate See also:Norman See also:work, but is mainly a Perpendicular reconstruction. On the seaward See also:side of the Ness there is a large See also:ancient earthwork which is attributed to the Norsemen through a reference in the Saxon See also:Chronicle (894) under the name Sceobrig. The parish is in the S.E. See also:parliamentary See also:division of the See also:country. Pop. (1901) 4081.
