SIMANCAS , a See also:

town of See also:Spain, in the See also:province of See also:Valladolid; 8 m. S.W. of Valladolid, on the road to See also:Zamora and the right See also:bank of the See also:river Pisuerga. Pop. (1900) 1129. Simancas is a town of See also:great antiquity, the See also:Roman Septimanca, with a. citadel dating from the Moorish occupation in the 9th See also:century, a See also:fine See also:bridge of seventeen See also:arches, and many remains of old walls. In 934 it was the See also:scene of a bloody See also:battle between the See also:Moors and Christians. The citadel is now the Archivo See also:General del Reino, to which the See also:national archives of Spain were removed by See also:order of See also:Philip II. in 1563. Their transference thither was first suggested to See also:Charles V. by See also:Cardinal Ximenes or Cisneros (d. 1517). The extensive alterations were made by three celebrated 16th-century architects, Juan de See also:Herrera, Alonso Berruguete and Juan See also:Gomez de See also:Mora; the arrangement of the papers was en-trusted to Diego de See also:Ayala. They occupy See also:forty-six rooms, and are arranged in upwards of 8o,000 bundles (33,000,000 documents), including important private as well as See also:state papers. The archives of the Indies were transferred in 1784 to the Lonja of See also:Seville (q.v.).
