N.E. of See also:Madrid by the Madrid-Alcuneza-Soria railway. Pop. (1900), 7151. Soria has a provincial See also:institute, See also:schools for teachers of both sexes, many See also:primary schools, savings See also:banks, two hospitals, See also:barracks, a See also:theatre and a See also:bull-See also:ring. The churches of Santo Domingo and See also:San See also:Nicolas, the cloisters of the See also:convent of San Juan, and several other ecclesiastical buildings are See also:fine specimens of Romanesque See also:work of the 12th and 13th centuries. Near the Duero are the ruins of the old citadel, and in many places the remains of the 13th See also:century walls of the See also:city are yet See also:standing. The more See also:modern streets are clean and well paved. The See also:bridge across the Duero is a massive structure which formerly had a See also:tower in the centre. The See also:population is chiefly agricultural;but there are also See also:flour See also:mills, tanneries, See also:potteries, &c.; and some See also:trade in See also:timber, See also:wool and See also:fruit is carried on. The Iberian and Carthaginian city of See also:Numantia, captured in 133 B.C. by the See also:Romans, after a See also:long and heroic resistance, was situated 3 M. N., on a See also:hill overlooking the confluence of the small river Tera with the Duero.
