STALYBRIDGE , a municipal and See also:

parliamentary See also:borough of See also:Cheshire, See also:England; the parliamentary borough extending into See also:Lancashire. Pop. (19o1), 27,673. It lies on the See also:river Tame, in a hilly See also:district, 6 m. E. of See also:Manchester, and is served by the See also:London & See also:North-Western, See also:Great Central, and Lancashire & See also:Yorkshire See also:railways. Immediately to the See also:west See also:lie the towns of See also:Dukinfield, and across the river in Lancashire, See also:Ashton-under-Lyne; while 2 M. See also:south of Stalybridge is the See also:town of See also:Hyde. The whole district is thus very densely populated. Stalybridge is one of the See also:oldest seats of the See also:cotton manufacture in this locality, the first cotton See also:mill having been erected in 1776, and the first See also:steam See also:engine in 1795. There are also See also:machine See also:works, See also:nail works, See also:paper See also:mills, and See also:iron and See also:brass foundries. The development of the town is See also:modern, as it was created a See also:market town in 1828, incorporated in 1857, and created a parliamentary borough, returning one member, in 1867.
