STREATHAM , a large residential See also:

district in the See also:south of See also:London, See also:England, within the municipal See also:borough of Wands-See also:worth. The name appears to indicate its position on an See also:ancient " See also:street " or See also:highway. According to Domesday, Streatham included several manors, two of which, Tooting and Balham (to follow the See also:modern nomenclature), belonged to the See also:abbot of St See also:Mary de Bec in See also:Normandy. One of several public grounds in the neighbourhood of Streatham is called Tooting Bec See also:Common. The See also:parish See also:church of St Leonard, Streatham, contains among its memorials that of See also:Henry Thrale (d. 1781), with an inscription by See also:Samuel See also:Johnson, who was a See also:constant visitor at Thrale's See also:house, Streatham See also:Park, which is no longer See also:standing.
