SYAGRIUS (d. 487) , the last of the See also:independent See also:Roman administrators of See also:Gaul, was the son of Aegidius, who had seized Gaul while See also:Ricimer was See also:master of See also:Italy. From 464 to 486 he governed that See also:part of Gaul which lies between the See also:Maas, the See also:Scheldt and the See also:Seine, and was termed " See also:king of the See also:Romans " by the See also:German invaders, See also:Franks, Burgundians and Visigoths, who already occupied the See also:rest of Gaul. Defeated in 486 by See also:Clovis, king of the Salian Franks, at the See also:battle of See also:Soissons, Syagrius fled, leaving his See also:land at the See also:mercy of the Franks. He sought See also:refuge with See also:Alaric II., king of the Visigoths, at See also:Toulouse, but Alaric imprisoned him instead of granting him refuge, and delivered him up to Clovis. He was executed in 487, secretly and by the See also:sword, according to See also:Gregory of See also:Tours.
