USKUB , Uscup, or SKOPIA (anc. Scupi, Turk. Ushkiib, Slay. Skoplye), the See also:capital of the vilayet of See also:Kossovo, See also:European See also:Turkey; on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:river Vardar, and at the junction of the See also:railways from Nigh and Mitrovitza to See also:Salonica. Pop. (1905) about 32,000, consisting chiefly of Slays (Serbs and Bulgars), See also:Turks, Albanians and a few See also:gipsies. Uskub occupies a picturesque and strategically important position at the See also:foot of a valley which severs two See also:mountain ranges, the Shar Planina and Kara Dagh. See also:Main roads radiate N.W. to See also:Prizren, W. to Gostivar, an important centre of See also:distribution, E.N.E. to Kumanovo, and thence into See also:Bulgaria, and S. to Kopriilii and See also:Monastir. The See also:city is the headquarters of an See also:army See also:corps, and the see of an Orthodox See also:Greek See also:archbishop, of the archbishop of the See also:Roman See also:Catholic Albanians and of a Bulgarian See also:bishop. Its See also:principal buildings are the citadel, the See also:palace, of the vali or provincial See also:governor, the Greek and Bulgarian See also:schools, numerous churches and mosques and a Roman See also:aqueduct. The See also:industries include See also:dyeing, See also:weaving, tanning and the manufacture of See also:metal-See also:work, See also:wine and See also:flour, but Uskiib is chiefly important as the commercial centre of the whole vilayet of Kossovo (q.v.). The Imperial See also:Ottoman Bank and the Banque de Salonique have branches in the city, and See also:French is to a remarkable extent the See also:language of See also:commerce. Uskub retains in a modified See also:form the name of Scupi, one of the See also:chief cities of See also:northern See also:Macedonia. A few unimportant ruins See also:mark the See also:ancient site, about 11 m. N.W. Scupi was destroyed by an See also:earthquake in A.D. 518, but was rebuilt by Justinian under the name of Justiniana Prima.
