VILLANUEVA Y GELTRU , a seaport of See also:

north-eastern See also:Spain, in the See also:province of See also:Barcelona; on the Barcelona-See also:Tarragona See also:section of the See also:coast railway. Pop. (1900) 11,85o. Villanueva is a busy See also:modern See also:town, with manufactures of See also:cotton, woollen and See also:linen goods, and of See also:paper. It has also See also:iron foundries and an important agricultural See also:trade. The See also:harbour affords safe and deep anchorage; it is a lifeboat station and the See also:head-quarters of a large fishing See also:fleet. The See also:coasting trade is also considerable. Villanueva has a museum, founded by the Catalan poet, historian and diplomat, See also:Vittorio See also:Balaguer (1824-1901), which contains collections of See also:Roman, See also:Egyptian and prehistoric antiquities, besides paintings, engravings, sculptures, coins and a large library, including many valuable See also:MSS.
