His See also:early childhood was spent in See also:Plymouth and at See also:Bristol, where he received his first schooling. He was in his ninth See also:year when his parents settled in See also:Spitalfields, and he entered the See also:Jews' See also:Free School, where eventually he became a teacher. Concurrently with his teaching See also:work he took his degree with honours at London University. He had already written a fantastic See also:tale entitled The Premier and the Painter in collaboration with See also:Louis See also:Cowen, when he resigned his position as a teacher owing to See also:differences with the school managers and ventured into journalism. He founded and edited Ariel, The London Puck, and did much See also:miscellaneous work on the London See also:press. FIe made his See also:literary reputation with a novel, The See also:Children of the See also:Ghetto (1892), which was followed by Ghetto Tragedies (1893); The See also:Master (1895); Dreamers of the Ghetto (1898); The See also:Mantle of See also:Elijah (19o1); and other tales and novels of See also:great See also:interest dealing with Jewish See also:life. Children of the Ghetto was produced in a See also:play in New See also:York with success in 1899, and has since been extensively played both in See also:English and Yiddish. Others of his plays are: Merely See also:Mary See also:Ann, played at the See also:Duke of York's See also:theatre, and The Serio-Comic Governess; See also:Nurse Marjorie; and The Melting Pot, all produced in New York. Mr Zangwill was the founder of the See also:International Jewish Territorial Organization (see See also:ZIoNIsm).
